Korpi's father Rauno is a well known ice hockey coach in Finland. He coached the Finnish womens' ice hockey team to the bronze medal at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games and won National titles with his club Tappara Tampere. Kiira Korpi missed 2007 Skate America due to illness (sinusitis). Korpi is the first Finnish skater to win a Grand Prix event (2010 Trophee Bompard). Korpi sat out part of the 2012/13 and the entire 2013/14 season recovering from injuries and surgery. She withdrew from the 2015 European Championships after the Short Program due to illness.
