Bourne and Kraatz have been skating together since 1991. They were the first ice dancers to include hydro blading elements in their routines. Victor Kraatz was born in Berlin and grew up in Switzerland before moving to Canada with his mother. Besides speaking German and English fluently, he also knows French. The team was forced to miss the 2000 Four Continents and World Championships, because Bourne underwent knee surgery. The couple changed coaches in the spring of 2000.

Dominant duo

Shae-Lynn Bourne and her partner, Victor Kraatz, have been counted among the world's best ice dancing teams consistently since 1995. The pair has won four bronze medals and finished no worse than fourth in its past five World Championships. The pair has won every Canadian national championship in which it has competed (nine) since 1993. Bourne and Kraatz did not compete at the 2000 World Championships in Nice, France, or the 2000 Canadian nationals because Bourne had surgery on her right knee. The team finished 10th in its Olympic Winter Games debut in 1994. Bourne and Kraatz entered the 1998 Nagano Games expecting to win a medal after winning bronze at the previous two World Championships but finished fourth. The pair returned to the podium at the 1998 and 1999 World Championships, winning bronze, but dropped to fourth in 2001.

Let's dance

Bourne and Kraatz worked with Toronto-based hip-hop dancer Clarence Ford in the offseason, putting their program together. "It's a tribute to street dancing," Kraatz says. "We anted something that was upbeat and would make the crowd excited and make them want to dance." Ford worked with the skaters for several days on the floor practicing hip-hop dance moves.

Innovation

During the Trophee Lalique in November, the pair was forced to stop its program in the middle when Bourne lost a barrette and the head official deemed the situation too dangerous to continue. There was a delay before the music restarted and Kraatz did an impromptu moonwalk while waiting. Bourne and Kraatz have done innovative and unusual programs in the past. The couple invented a technique called hydroblading, in which the performers skate low to the ice with their bodies in a deep lean, pushing their skate edges deep into the ice.

Coaching switch

This is their second season working under coach Tatyana Tarasova and assistant coach Nikolai Morozov in Connecticut. Tarasova also coaches three-time men's world champion Alexei Yagudin, among others. Tarasova is the pair's fifth coach. Bourne says they switched because they needed a change. "Each time we have a new coach, we learn something new," she says.

Knee surgery

Bourne and Kraatz first got together in 1991. Bourne was a pairs skater growing up and split with her partner after the 1990-1991 season. Bourne then joined Kraatz and switched to dance. They competed in their first World Championships together in 1993 and remained among the best teams in the world until the 1999-2000 season, when the pair took some time off because of Bourne's knee injury. She had surgery in the spring of 2000.
