*"In 1901 the application of a lady to be allowed to compete for the that years World Championship caused a surprise. There was no provision in the Rules for such a thing and it was only in 1903 that the congress decided that Ladies should not be permitted to compete at international men's Championships. The 1905 congress resolved to introduce a World's Championship for Ladies."
