Obertas was a two-time World Junior Champion with former partner Dmitri Palamarchuk. The couple split after the 1999/2000 season, and Obertas moved to St. Petersburg together with her mother. She teamed up with Alexei Sokolov in the summer of 2000. They decided to compete for Russia.
