Making her mark
Elina Kettunen is compete in her first Olympic Winter Games. The 2001 Finnish national champion placed 11th at the 2001 World Championships. She has continued to improve, capturing fifth at the 2002 European Championships. At the Salt Lake Games, the 20-year-old Kettunen will be joined by compatriot Susanna Poykio, who placed sixth at the 2002 European Championships. The best result for a Finnish skater in the history of Olympic ladies' figure skating is a 10th-place finish by Kristiina Wegelius in 1980.
Not exactly love at first skate
Kettunen began skating at age 5 when her parents saw an advertisement for a local skating school in the lobby of a local supermarket. At first, she resisted the lessons, but she agreed to return to the rink after a six-month break and began to enjoy the sport.
