At 27, Laetitia Hubert is one of the oldest and most experienced skaters in the field for the Salt Lake Games, having competed in six World Championships and three previous Olympic Winter Games. She placed fourth at the 1992 and 1998 World Championships -- huge improvements from her performances at the 1992 and 1998 Games.
Olympic disappointments
At her Olympic debut in 1992, Hubert placed fifth in the short program but fell five times in the free skate, dropping her to 12th overall. Still, the 1992 result marked her best Olympic finish. After another poor performance at the 1994 Lillehammer Games -- she finished 17th -- Hubert entered the 1998 Nagano Games as a medal contender, having won the Trophee Lalique that year. However, she faltered again at the Games, finishing 20th. "My first three Olympics were bad," she says. "The long programs were bad. I fell and fell."
Injury report
Hubert missed the entire 1995-1996 season and the first part of the 1996-1997 season because of a torn meniscus and damaged cartilage in her right knee. She had surgeries in 1996 and 1997 in an attempt to correct the problem. At the 1997 World Championships, which marked just her third competition in a two-year span, Hubert finished a solid sixth. The knee problem flared up again later in her career and she was forced to have another surgery in November 1999. She says the injury is still painful. Hubert also missed most the 1992-1993 season with a right ankle injury. She had surgery on the ankle in June 1993.
