Gusmeroli also sucessfully competed in waterskiing, winning the French Junior Nationals and finishing second at the European Championships in 1991.

Gusmeroli moved from her home in Annecy to Paris in the middle of the 1999/2000 season to train with Stanislav Leonovitch. Currently she is coached by Katia Beyer, since Leonovitch is too busy with pair skating

World success

Vanessa Gusmeroli (pronounced gooz-meh-ROH-lee) is making her second Olympic appearance at the Salt Lake Games. She placed sixth at the 1998 Nagano Games. She has also competed at six World Championships, highlighted by a bronze medal at the 1997 worlds in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she finished behind Americans Tara Lipinksi and Michelle Kwan. Gusmeroli was second behind Lipinski after the short program but finished fourth in the free skate to drop to third overall.

Consistent

Although Gusmeroli has never returned to the medal podium at a major international event since 1997, she has performed consistently. She finished fifth at the 1999 World Championships and fourth at the 2000 worlds. Gusmeroli fell to ninth at the 2001 worlds and finished 11th at the 2002 European Championships.

All-around athlete

Gusmeroli is also an elite-level water skier, having won the 1999 French national title in trick skiing. She says that skating improves her water skiing, but water skiing makes her shoulder sore when she skates. Figure skating has remained her focus, and she did not compete in any water skiing competitions last summer.
