Berezhnaya was seriously injured in 1996, when her partner Oleg Sliakhov hit her on the head with his blade while they practised a side by side spin. After her recovery, Berezhnaya teamed up with Sikharulidze. Together with coaches Tamara Moskvina and Igor Moskvin and fellow skaters Oksana Kazakova/Artur Dmitriev, the team moved to Hackensack in the USA in summer 1999. The following season, Berezhnaya tested positive for a prohibited substance at Europeans in Vienna, stripping them of their European title and preventing them from defending their World title in Nice. Berezhnaya/Sikhuralidze worked with Igor Bobrin as a choreographer for the first time in their career this year. He created the Charlie Chaplin program.
